AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team played host to The Firestone Invitational at the par 72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course on Monday. The Zips finished the initial 36 holes in 2nd place with scores of 290, 283, - 573 (-3) while Maryland leads the 16-team field with scores of 284, 285, - 569 (-7).
Akron fell to 5th place with a 2-over par first round performance, but battled back in the second round, climbing three spots finishing at 5-under par. Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, Englandwill) led with a pair of 2-under par 70's for a 4th place overall standing of 140 (-4) strokes. Senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) followed with two rounds of even-par play for a 144 total and 20th place, while redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) was 1-over par for the day with a 75, 70 – 145 (+1) tally. Junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) and senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) rounded out the team scoring tied for 34th overall with 2-over par performances at 146 strokes apiece.
For the Zips' individual competitors, junior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) turned-in a148 (+4) effort while junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) carded a 152 (+8) score. Junior Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland) tallied scores of 160 (+16) and 161 (+17), respectively.
Tuesday's final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with split tee times on holes No. 1 & No. 10.
