Laryea Selected as MAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - University of Akron sophomore Richie Laryea (Toronto, Ontario (Canada)) has been tabbed by the Mid-American Conference as the MAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Oct. 12.The conference award is the second of the season and of the career for Laryea. The honor marked the fourth weekly conference accolade for a Zip in 2015.
Laryea turned in a strong week for Akron helping the Zips extend their winning streak to five straight with triumphs past Santa Clara (2-0) and Buffalo (2-1). He recorded a pair of goals on six shots.
Laryea propelled the Zips to a 2-0 victory past Santa Clara last Tuesday, Oct. 6, scoring a pair of goals.
He opened his evening scoring his fifth goal of the season and second game-winning tally at the 39:04 mark off an assist from sophomore Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand). He later added his team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 83rd minute (82:09) off assists from freshman Pau Belana (Barcelona, Catalonia) and redshirt sophomore Tyler Sanda (North Royalton, Ohio).
Laryea capped his week recording two shots in the Zips' come-from-behind 2-1 win at Buffalo on Friday, Oct. 9.
On the season, Laryea leads the squad in goals (6), shots (36) and shots on goal (16), while ranking second in points (15) and game-winners (2), and third in assists (3).
Akron (9-2-1, 1-0 MAC) opens the home portion of its league schedule on Saturday, Oct. 17, as the Zips welcome Northern Illinois to FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field for a 7 p.m. game.
