Week In Review
• Last time the Zips played at home, they defeated St. Bonaventure 3-1, as three different Akron players scored goals after the team went down 1-0 early in the first half. Junior Hannah Werth and freshman Amy Dean scored their first goals of 2014 while sophomore Sarah Sivic nailed her second.
• On the road, the Zips took on a Boston University squad receiving votes, and after again going down 1-0 early, this time in the 10th minute, UA battled back and senior Karina Atkinson scored off of a corner kick as Akron drew to a 1-1 tie with the Terriers.
• Two days later, Akron took on Bryant, another matchup that would go to two overtimes. Junior Sydney Blomquist scored her first on the year while Dean added her second in regulation. Tied 2-2, the Zips and Bulldogs went to double overtime where a cross from Atkinson made its way through the goalie's hands and off of a defender into the back of the net, giving Akron a 3-2 victory.
• With her goal at Boston U. and assist and game-winning goal set-up at Bryant, Atkinson was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
About Akron
• Freshman Loreana Lonigro, a key player in many of the Zips goals recently, leads the MAC with four assists so far this season. Her role off of set pieces has made her a passing threat for Akron in 2014.
• Dean's two goals this season have come off of just two shots, giving her a perfect 1.000 shot percentage.
• Senior Alex Luevano-Harden and junior Klaire Adee have continued to share time in net, with the former accumulating just over 250 minutes in goal and the latter with 417 minutes.
• Times have been frustrating thus far for senior Lani Smith, as the forward has taken 27 shots but has just one goal. With nine goals in 2014, Smith is bound for a breakout as the season progresses.
• 15 different Zips have been given the starting nod in games this season, while 21 have appeared in games, all but two on the complete roster.
About Youngstown State
• With four wins already this season, the Penguins have defeated VMI, Robert Morris, Malone, and Tiffin on their way to a 4-3-1 record.
• Three different Youngstown St. players have multiple goals this season, with no. 5 Kathy Baquero leading the way with three. Teammate no. 3 Chelsey Haney leads the team in points (7) with her two goals and three assists.
• No. 29 Jackie Podolsky has racked in a majority of the minutes for the Penguins in goal this season, posting a .775 save percentage.
Youngstown State Series Notes
• The Zips and Penguins are familiar foes, as the two have met five times in Akron's short program history. UA owns the series lead with a 4-0-1 record.
• Akron defeated Youngstown St. in the first four of the school's meetings. It wasn't until last season when the Penguins drew to a 1-1 with the Zips. Smith scored the lone goal for Akron in that contest last September.
• In two of those contests alone, the Zips posted a total goal differential of 14-0 with a 6-0 win in 2002 and an 8-0 win in 2003. Overall, Akron has totalled a 21-4 goal differential in the five matches.
Looking Ahead
• Following this contest, MAC play begins for the Zips, who begin with conference games next weekend at rivals Ohio (Sept. 26) and Kent State (Sept. 28).
• Akron continues MAC play as October begins, hosting four games over two weekends with Eastern Michigan (Oct. 3), Bowling Green (Oct. 5), Western Michigan (Oct. 10), and Northern Illinois (Oct. 12) all coming to town.
Game Promotions
• Tonight's game marks Hometown Heroes celebration as Akron will honor the "Red, White, and Roo" by granting free admission to all military members, police, and firefighters.
