PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Coming back from an early 1-0 deficit, the University of Akron women's soccer team captured their first win of 2014 as they defeated Robert Morris in their second and final match at the Steel City Classic in Pittsburgh.
The Zips found themselves in a hole early as Colonials forward Antonia Grese took a cross from teammate Kristie Hamilton to put Robert Morris on the board 1-0 in the 15th minute.
Just over five minutes later, however, UA found success on the offensive end as senior Lani Smith scored the equalizer off of a corner kick by sophomore Karin Norman. Smith, the team's leading goalscorer from one year ago, took six shots in the game with four of those on goal, both team highs.
With less than two minutes left in the first half, freshman Loreana Lonigro crossed the ball into the middle for junior Holly Ohradzansky, who, with the goalie committed up in the box, found the back of the net to put the Zips up 2-1 heading into halftime.
Ohradzansky tallied the first points of her college career with her goal in the 44th minute. The midfielder from Avon, Ohio, matched her career shot total of three in today's game alone as she took three on goal. Ohradzansky has appeared in 27 games with Akron, primarily at outside back, heading into her third year with the team.
Akron (1-1) kept pushing forward in the second half, taking 12 shots and three corner kicks, but was unable to score with Colonials new goalie Becky Schoenecker making eight saves in the period. Schoenecker replaced starter Chelsea De Jager and played all 45 minutes of the second half.
The Zips held strong on their defensive end, allowing no goals to Robert Morris (1-1) on five shots and no corners in the final half of play.
Junior Klaire Adee played the full 90 minutes for Akron in goal, compiling two saves over the day.
Lonigro added two shots for the Zips, both on goal, while junior Sydney Blomquist contributed two as well with one on goal.
Following the conclusion of the tournament today, in which all four programs (Akron, Duquesne, Pittsburgh, Robert Morris) invited went 1-1 in round robin play, Smith and junior Jenna Andersen were both named to the Steel City Classic All-Tournament Team. The full results of the tournament and the All-Tournament Team list can be found below.
