White Team hangs on for the win in Volleyball's intrasquad scrimmage

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron volleyball team went head-to-head in its annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon, with the white team edging out the black team in a best-of-three match.
After dropping the opening set 25-20, the white team, comprised mainly of the Zips' underclassmen and newcomers, came from behind to win the second set 26-24, and locked up the final set by a 15-10 margin.
Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Bedell led all scorers with 11 kills and a .348 attack percentage, followed closely by teammate Anna Wenger with nine kills. Karley Kusan paced the white team with 33 assists on the day.
Callie Mack and Kelsey Wilson each posted double-digit digs for the black team, with 13 and 10 digs respectively. Senior middle blocker Mary Delich registered some big plays at the net, recording five block-assists and one solo block. Julia Smagacz and Madi Baer picked up seven kills apiece.
UA's first match of the regular season is now just a week away. The Zips open on the road at the Indiana State Holiday Inn Classic, Aug. 29-30. Akron will face Chicago State and host Indiana State in a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, before a single match against North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
The Zips will open their home slate when they host their own Akron Invitational for the 19th year on Sept. 5-6, with two matches on Friday against Bryant (12:30 p.m.) and Binghamton (8 p.m.). Tournament play wraps up Saturday the 6th with matches against Drake at 3 p.m. and Austin Peay at 8 p.m.
