AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron pole vaulter Annika Roloff has been named Mid-American Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Roloff smashed her own school record and defeated reigning NCAA Indoor pole vault champion and national record holder Kaitlin Petrillose with a winning jump of 14-05.25 Saturday night at the Longhorn Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas.
After passing on her first four heights, Roloff breezed through the competition – clearing her next four attempts on her first try. Her winning jump broke the school record by nearly four inches (14-01.75) and bested Petrillose, who jumped 14-01.25, on her home field in a heads-up dual. Roloff's mark is ranked No. 4 in the NCAA, No. 2 in the NCAA East Region and No. 1 in the MAC.
It has been an exceptional debut season for Roloff, who transfered from Germany for the start of the indoor campaign. She set the indoor school record in twice and was a medalist at the NCAA Indoor Championships, placing third with a jump of 14-07.25. She was also the 2014 MAC Pole Vault Champion, winning the event with a conference meet-record jump of 14-01.25.
The Zips men's and women's teams will have one final tune-up for the 2014 MAC Outdoor Championships this weekend when they host the annual Campbell/Wright Invitational at Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex.
The hammer throw will begin Friday at 3:30 p.m. with the remaining running and field events starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. Admisssion is free.
