RICHMOND, Va. – With a pair of first-half goals, The University of Akron men's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to earn a 2-1 spring exhibition victory against VCU Saturday afternoon at City Stadium.
"We picked up a hard fought victory against a very well-coached and NCAA Tournament-qualifying team today," said UA head coach Jared Embick. "I thought we showed some fight batting back from a one-goal deficit to get the win on the road. Overall, I was very happy with our performance."
After falling behind 1-0, the Zips pulled even when Saad Abdul-Salaam played a low cross to Clint Caso, who turned and slid the ball between the keeper's legs for his second goal in as many spring games.
Akron then took the lead when Bryce Cregan played a through ball from his left back position to Sean Sepe, who buried it with a bender from 18 yards out. Sepe, who was St. John's (N.Y.) leading goal scorer as a sophomore last fall, has now found the back of the net in each of UA's first two spring matches.
Making his second straight start of the spring, goalkeeper Jake Fenlason logged all 90 minutes for the Zips.
After playing on the road the last two games, Akron's spring exhibition season will continue at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field next Saturday (Apr. 12) when Dayton comes to town for a 5 p.m. match. All spring exhibition contests at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field are open to the public and free of charge.
