OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Akron (14-13, 6-2 MAC) baseball team dropped game two of the three-game Mid-American Conference series to Miami University (11-17, 3-5 MAC) by a final score of 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hayden Park.
Sophomore JT Brubaker made the start on the mound for Akron, and turned in 4.1 innings with five runs allowed, three walks and one strikeout. The right-hander's record fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Both teams traded scoreless first innings, but Miami took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single by Dan Walsh.
The RedHawks and Zips lineups would remain quiet until Miami erupted for a three-run fifth inning to bring the game to a 5-0 RedHawks advantage. Chad Sedio registered a two-RBI triple to right-center, and Steve Sada recorded a run-scoring bunt to extend the Miami lead.
Miami registered their final run of the game on a sacrifice fly off of Akron reliever Joe Cochran. Cochran performed well in long relief out of the UA bullpen, tossing 3.2 innings with four hits, one run allowed, and four strikeouts.
Akron threatened with two base runners in the eighth, but couldn't string together enough hits to put together a rally. Miami's starting pitcher Nathan Williams tamed the UA offense with 8.0 innings, seven strikeouts and four hits allowed.
Redshirt senior James Sheltrown reached base twice as he recorded a base hit and a walk in the contest. Sheltrown has recorded five walks in the past three games, and is second overall on the squad with 15 walks in 2014.
Danny Lawrence, Matt Rembielak and Daulton Mosbarger each recorded a hit on Saturday.
Akron and Miami will play the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 PM in Hayden Park.
