OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Akron (14-14, 6-3 MAC) baseball team fell in the series finale to Mid-American Conference opponent Miami (Ohio) University by a final score of 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Hayden Park.
Redshirt junior Myles McVeigh made the start at pitcher for the Zips, and recorded 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and with one earned run allowed. McVeigh's record fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Following scoreless frames from both sides in the first inning, Akron scored the first run of the game in the top of the second on a RBI single from freshman James Meeker III to take a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Daulton Mosbarger extended the UA lead to 2-0 with a RBI double to left center, plating Kris Simonton, in the top of the third. Miami cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth on a Ryan Elble RBI single before overtaking the one-run advantage.
Miami took a 4-2 lead with a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. McVeigh allowed an RBI bunt by Elble and an RBI double by Gary Russo, before freshman Josh Davis came out of the Akron bullpen. Davis allowed a sac fly, but ended the inning with minimal damage.
The RedHawks added their final run of the afternoon in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Reed Schlesner off Akron's Davis, bringing the game to a 5-2 Miami lead. Davis finished the day with 1.2 innings, two hits and one earned run allowed.
Akron fought back for one run in the top of the eighth to make it 5-3 Miami on a RBI double by senior Grant Alvarez.
Redshirt junior Matt LaRocca worked a scoreless eighth with a strikeout, but the Zips went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to finalize the contest.
Overall, Akron posted six hits and two walks led by Mosbarger with one run, two hits and one RBI. Devan Ahart, Alvarez, Meeker and Brady Stewart registered one base hit apiece. Simonton had one run, one RBI and one stolen base.
Akron will look ahead to a pair of away midweek matchups this coming week. UA will play at Pittsburgh on Tuesday and then Canisius on Wednesday. The Zips will be at home for another MAC series next weekend against the Ohio University Bobcats, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m., at Lee R. Jackson Field.
