AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer team will wrap up its five-game spring exhibition schedule Saturday at Xavier in the Third Annual Down Syndrome Awareness Spring Classic.
The Zips and Musketeers will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
Admission for the match is $5 with all proceeds benefiting "Devin's Team" as part of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati Annual Buddy Walk. Devin's Team is named after Xavier head coach Andy Fleming's daughter who was born in May 2011.
The Zips are 2-2 this spring after posting victories at Cleveland State (3-0) and VCU (2-1) and suffering setbacks to Dayton (2-1) and Louisville (1-0). Conversely, the Musketeers have gone 3-0-1 with wins over Division II schools Cedarville and Indianapolis and Division III's Thomas More.
Xavier finished the 2013 campaign with an overall record of 10-7-2 and 6-3-0 mark in the Big East Conference.
Akron captured Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles while posting an overall record of 17-4-1 during Jared Embick's first year as head coach at UA in 2013. The Zips were playing their best soccer in the final third of the season – taking a 10-match unbeaten streak (9-0-1) into the NCAA Tournament – and defeated defending champion Indiana in the first round.
