Women's Tennis Topped 6-1 by Visiting Eastern Michigan

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team continued Mid-American Conference play with a 6-1 loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon indoors at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
Eastern Michigan (9-6, 2-0 MAC) won all three flights of doubles and claimed straight-set victories at Nos. 1-3 and 6 singles en route to extending its win streak to three matches.
Akron (9-8, 0-2 MAC) sophomore Martina Zerbola spoiled the Eagles' shutout with a last-match-on-court 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2), 1-0 (3) win at No. 4 singles over Mariya Toncheva. Zips freshman Shannon Newnes forced a third set at No. 5 singles against Daphne Friedrichs. After losing her first set 6-4, Newnes won the second 6-3, but lost the third-set tiebreaker, 10-5.
"I'm pleased with the consistent development of our young players," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said.
With the University on Spring Break next week, Akron makes a non-conference road trip to Savannah State and Georgia Southern, both on Monday, then resumes MAC play at Northern Illinois on Friday.
"We're looking forward to having the opportunity to practice and play outdoors next week," Padgett said.
Zips Notebook: UA senior Ksenia Berestetska suffered just her second loss in dual-match singles play this season, maintaining a 13-2 record ... the Eagles posted their second-straight win over the Zips, after Akron won the previous four meetings in the all-time series.
