STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of Akron women's tennis team started its Spring Break trip to the state of Georgia with a 7-0 win over Savannah State and a 4-1 loss to Georgia Southern in non-conference competition on Monday. The Zips improved to 10-9 in dual-match play and this morning's shutout of SSU ended a five-match losing streak.
"It was great to finally play a match outdoors this season," UA head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Although it was difficult to play two matches in one day outdoors, when we haven't had the chance to practice outside at all this spring."
Despite having to make the adjustment to playing outdoors, the Zips made short work of Savannah State (5-14), winning at all three doubles flights and taking straight-set victories at each singles position. UA posted 8-0 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to clinch the early point, then tallied five 6-0 sets and gave up no more than three games in any set during singles.
UA earned its lone point against Georgia Southern (8-9) thanks to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles from Ksenia Berestetska over Stephanie Wood. The Eagles took a 1-0 advantage with victories at the second and third flights of doubles, then grabbed straight-set decisions at Nos. 1, 6 and 3 singles to earn match point.
"We know that we have a lot of work to do still this season," Padgett said. "But this group is determined to compete each and every time we ask them to, and we are very proud of them for that."
Akron will train down South for the next few days, before resuming Mid-American Conference play with a trip to Northern Illinois on Friday. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
Zips Notebook: Akron is 8-5 in road matches this season ... today was the Zips' third doubleheader of the season and the squad is 4-2 when competing in that situation ... UA senior Ksenia Berestetska improved her dual-match singles record this year to 15-2.
