ITHACA, N.Y. – Unable to compete with a full lineup due to injury, the Akron women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Cornell on Saturday at Reis Tennis Center.
The Zips (9-5) were forced to give up the third flight of doubles and sixth flight of singles by default as the Big Red (5-3) posted their third-straight win.
Cornell earned the doubles point with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 by Lauren Frazier and Shannon Comolli over Shannon Newnes and Caroline Harpaintner. The Zips lost in straight sets at all five remaining singles position.
"It was a difficult match playing with only five players, but this group fought hard," UA head coach Brandon Padgett said. "I am proud of the effort given."
Akron competes at home on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET versus Oakland at its indoor home of LaTuchie Tennis Center in nearby Stow (driving directions).
Zips Notebook: Akron and Cornell were meeting for the first time in dual-match competition ... the Zips are 7-4 in road matches this season ... this was UA's first 7-0 loss since Feb. 27, 2011 at Boston University.
