AKRON, Ohio – A marathon third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles was the deciding factor in the Akron women's tennis team's 4-3 loss to Oakland on Sunday indoors at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
UA's Shannon Newnes fell 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (7) to Karine Celis in the match-winning, last-match-on-court contest. Newnes was down 5-4 in the final set and rallied to force the breaker in a matchup that took over three hours to complete.
After giving up the doubles point, Akron (9-6) posted victories in order at Nos. 1, 6 and 3 singles to take a 3-1 advantage, but Oakland (4-8) won at the remaining singles positions to clinch match point. All four of the Grizzles' singles victories required a third set.
Oakland, competing for the first time since a Feb. 27 loss to Stetson, opened the day with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.
Akron starts Mid-American Conference play at home against Toledo on Friday, March 21 and Eastern Michigan one day later. Both contests are scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET first serve.
