The Akron-Penn State Series: Akron trails Penn State 4-2 in the series, which began during the 1937-38 season. The Zips ended a four-game losing streak in the series thanks to an 85-60 win in Puerto Rico on Nov. 18, 2012. The Zips and the Nittany Lions last met in University Park on Dec. 22, 1994, an 80-45 win by PSU.
Scouting the Nittany Lions: Penn State enters tonight's game with a 4-1 record following a 63-61 win over Southern California on Nov. 23 in Charleston.
Two Nittany Lion players are averaging double figures, including D.J. Newbill (23.6 ppg) and Shep Garner (12.6 ppg). Ross Travis is the team's leading rebounder (7.6 rpg).
News, Notes and Storylines
- Akron will face Penn State in the final contest of a four-game road trip on Tuesday.
- The Zips are coming off a 68-63 win over South Carolina on Nov. 23 to earn third place at the 2014 Gildan Charleston Classic.
- Noah Robotham led all scorers with 16 points and added a team-high six rebounds. Deji Ibitayo (15) and Kwan Cheatham, Jr., (13) also scored in double figures.
- This is the fourth-straight opponent from one of the Power Five Conferences for the Zips. They are 2-1 so far.
- Tuesday's game against the Nittany Lions will be the second for head coach Keith Dambrot against PSU (1-0), the sixth (1-5) against a Big Ten opponent for Dambrot (fourth at Akron, 1-3) and the 27th meeting against a current member of the Big Ten for the Zips (6-20).
- Akron is winning the turnover battle so far this season. The Zips have committed fewer turnovers than their opponents in all four games.
- For the first time in program history, the Zips have two wins over Power Five Conference opponents in the same season (Southern California, South Carolina).
- The Zips have forced 60 turnovers, converting them into 72 points, so far this season.
- Noah Robotham was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week on November 24.
On the Line vs. Penn State
- A victory will give the Zips a 3-1 record on this four-game road trip.
- A win over the Gamecocks would be the second-consecutive win over Penn State and third overall in the series.
- A Zips victory would give Akron three wins over a Power Five Conference in the same season for the first time in program history.
- An Akron win would give the Zips a seventh victory over a Big Ten opponent in 27 tries (currently 6-20).
Looking Ahead: Akron returns home on Sunday, Nov. 30, to play host to Bryant at 5 p.m. ET at James A. Rhodes Arena. The game will be the first of a stretch that includes eight-of-nine games at home.
