Swimming and Diving Takes Second Place in Magnus Cup Invitational

CLEVELAND – The University of Akron swimming and diving team finalized competition at the three-day Magnus Cup Invitational by securing second place out of ten teams with a final tally of 995.5 at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Sunday evening.
Duquesne captured the Magnus Cup, posting a final score of 1415.5. Xavier followed Akron with 922 points for third place while Buffalo (805) finished fourth and Cleveland State (669.5) rounded out the top-five.
En route to securing second place overall, UA recorded eight individual first-place finishes, set seven meet records and one Busbey Natatorium record.
With an individual victory in the 50-yard butterfly, junior Erin Seiler registered her second first-place finish of the Magnus Cup with a time of 24.51. Her performance also marked the second time on the weekend where Seiler bested the meet record. Her other win came in the 100-yard butterfly on day two in which she set both a meet and pool record.
Akron also took second in the 50-yard butterfly as junior Ashley Niznik trailed Seiler with a time of 24.90. Junior Hannah Raspopovich joined the duo in the top-10 with a seventh-place time of 26.83.
Also picking up a pair of individual victories on the weekend was sophomore Luka Szynal, who took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a meet-record time of 2:00.29 to go with her day-two victory in the 100-yard backstroke.
Niznik posted Akron's third top finish of the final session, coming in the 50-yard backstroke at 25.89, also setting a new meet record. Szynal finished fourth in the event and senior Taylor Hart took 11th.
Four different Zips posted top-20 finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle, led by junior Ashley Drazkowski in sixth. Four Zips also finished in the top-20 in the 200-yard fly while senior Amanda Lawson picked up a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard breastroke.
The 400-freestyle relay team of Raspopovich, Hart, Niznik and Kelsey Ferrante took fourth while Akron also placed 11th and 19th in the event to close out the meet.
The Zips are back in action on Dec. 5-7 when they host the annual Zippy Invitational at the Ocasek Natatorium.
