Swimming and Diving Opens Magnus Cup Invitational in Second Place

Cleveland – The University of Akron swimming and diving team finished day one of competition at the Magnus Cup Invitational in second place by accumulating a team score of 358.5 at Cleveland State's Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
Of the ten women's teams competing at the event, Duquesne leads the Zips with a score of 499. Akron is followed by Xavier with 330.5 points and Cleveland State with 275.
Junior Hannah Raspopovich and junior Alice Hottensmith each registered top finishes for Akron while posting new meet records.
Raspopovich posted a first place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 29.20, a new meet record, and placed third in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.82.
Also in the 50-yard breaststroke, sophomore Mary Kallinicou registered a time of 30.38 for fifth place while senior Amanda Lawson also picked up a top-10 finish in the event with a time of 30.45.
Hottensmith notched first place in the one-meter dive with a score of 282.85 as she shattered her previous career-high score of 273.50. Hottensmith was followed by sophomore Rachel Aepelbacher (256.50) and sophomore Paige Kelkenberg (246.30), who placed third and fourth, respectively.
Two 200-yard freestyle relay teams finished in the top-10, led by the second-place team of Raspopovich, Ashley Niznik, Kelsey Ferrante and Susan Franz with a time of 1:34.85.
The Zips ended the day with another pair of strong finishes coming in the 400-yard medley relay anchored by the team of Luka Szynal, Lawson, Erin Seiler and Ferrante, which took third at 3:50.56. Akron's second 400-yard medley relay team took eighth.
The three-day Magnus Cup Invitational continues on Saturday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m at the Busbey Natatorium.
