AKRON, Ohio - Coming off of its first win in MAC play on Friday over Eastern Michigan, the University of Akron women's soccer team fell to Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon after the Falcons netted the golden goal in the 95th minute to win 1-0.
The Zips first strong chance came in the 33rd minute when senior Lani Smith took a shot in the box blocked wide and out of bounds by Falcons goalie Lauren Cadel. On the ensuing corner from senior Sydney Blomquist, the ball popped off of the far post and Bowling Green was only able to clear it out after another Smith shot, this one blocked.
Blomquist went on to take two more corners in the first half, the third and final coming in the 33rd minute as freshman Loreana Lonigro turned on the ball and took a shot on ball, saved by Cadel right in front of her.
Despite leading the Falcons 21-13 in shots overall in the game, the teams battled to overtime, where Bowling Green would go on to score in the 95th minute. Paddling the ball to the left side, Skylar Fleak took a shot from the deep left side inside the box and netted it for the golden goal, giving Bowling Green the 1-0 win.
Smith tallied 10 shots in the contest, with two on goal, while teammates junior Holly Ohradzansky and sophomore Sarah Sivic added two shots apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Klaire Adee made five saves for the Zips in net.
Akron returns to action next Friday as they continue with MAC play with Western Michigan coming to town. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
