AKRON, Ohio — Akron men's soccer shut out No. 21 UAB, 1-0, on a chilly Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Assisted by junior Andrew Souders (Amherst, Ohio), sophomore midfielder Adam Najem (Clifton, N.J.) found the back of the net for the game-winning goal in the 65th minute.
The Zips improved to 5-3-1 overall, while the Blazers fell to 6-3-1.
"It was a good win against a good opponent," UA head coach Jared Embick said. "We had to have our A game today. I thought it was a complete performance."
Akron's first chance to score came on a corner kick in the 13th minute.
In the 25th minute, the Zips had another corner kick that was headed out by a defender.
Sophomore midfielder Victor Souto (Sao Paolo, Brazil) had a shot in the open box that went over the crossbar.
In the 35th minute, UA had its third corner kick but couldn't convert. Two minutes later UAB had its first shot on goal, but it was saved by junior goalkeeper Jake Fenlason (San Diego, Calif.).
UAB had a corner kick opportunity in the 39th minute, but it was headed out by Akron.
The teams were scoreless at halftime.
UAB had a shot on goal in the 81st minute, but Fenlason came up strong again.
Overall, Akron out-shot UAB, 12-6. UAB had five shots on goal compared to Akron's four. The Zips had five corner kicks, while the Blazers had two.
Fenlason recorded five saves in his 90 minutes of action.
Akron hits the road for two games. The Zips' first stop is Michigan State on Tuesday, Oct. 7 for a 4 p.m. match.
