Volleyball travels for rematches with Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio)

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron volleyball team will see a pair of familiar opponents this weekend when it visits Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) for two Mid-American Conference East Division matchups.

ZIP LINES
• Akron is in its 41st season of collegiate volleyball. Head coach Ron Arenz is in his seventh season at the helm, holding a 76-126 record leading the Zips and a 112-155 mark all-time as a collegiate head coach.
• Akron returns 10 letterwinners including four starters from last season. Only three active players for the Zips carry more than one season of experience with the Blue and Gold, but all seven newcomers from last year return to add depth to the roster.
• In the most recent NCAA rankings summary of the year, Kelsey Wilson is first in the MAC and 10th in the nation in service aces per set with 0.48. She is 43rd in the country in overall service aces with 32.
• As a team, UA is 48th in the country in service aces with 126 on the season.
ON DECK
• Akron begins to make its way back through the Mid-American Conference East Division when it travels to Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) this weekend. The Zips will look to secure the season sweep against the Falcons on Friday at 5 p.m., before taking on one of the top teams in the division in the RedHawks on Saturday at 7 p.m.
• Akron trails Bowling Green, 20-30, in the all-time series. The Zips defeated the Falcons in straight sets for their first league win of the season back on Sept. 27 (26-24, 26-24, 25-22), marking UA's first victory over BGSU since 2010.
• Akron trails the all-time series with Miami (Ohio), 14-38. The Zips fell to the RedHawks on Sept. 26 at the JAR (21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23).
LAST TIME OUT
• Akron dropped a pair of three-set matches to West Division opponents Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan at James A. Rhodes Arena last weekend.
• Against the Chippewas, senior Mary Delich led the UA attack with eight kills and only two errors to hit .353 for the match. Jessica Kloehn posted six kills and Julia Smagacz added five.
• Smagacz was the frontrunner for Akron against EMU, tallying a team-high nine kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Anna Wenger and Julie Shallman chipped in five kills apiece.
• UA returns to the JAR for its final two home matches of the season next weekend, hosting MAC East leader Ohio on Friday, Nov. 7, and rival Kent State on Saturday, Nov. 8. Delich, Akron's lone senior, will be recognized prior to her final home match against the Golden Flashes.
SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN
• Bowling Green enters Friday's match with a 5-17 overall record and a 2-8 mark in the conference. The Falcons' two league wins have come against Kent State (3-0) and Toledo (3-1).
• BGSU is led by third-year head Danijela Tomic who garners a 41-44 mark at BGSU and is 199-105 in her career as a head coach.
• Nicole Slimko paces the Bowling Green offense with 3.22 kills per set, and setter Erica Fullenkamp posts 9.01 assists per set. Kelsey Bates is fourth in the conference and first on the team in blocking, putting up 1.12 per frame.
SCOUTING MIAMI (OHIO)
• Miami enters its Friday's match with Buffalo standing at 14-8 overall and 7-3 in the MAC, good for second place in the East Division behind unbeaten Ohio.
• MU is led by Carolyn Condit, who is in her 31st season leading the RedHawks. Condit holds a record of 535-428 at Miami, and is 634-508 overall in her collegiate coaching career.
• The Miami offense is led by Olivia Rusek (2.72 k/s) and Jenny Ingle (42 k/s). Krista Brakauskas and Meg Riley average 6.05 and 5.75 assists per set, respectively. Riley was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week after recording her 13th triple-double against Toledo. As a team, Miami is second in the conference in kills per set (13.44) and assists per set (12.50)
