Swimming and Diving Earns Win Over YSU on Senior Night

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team bested Youngstown State University on Friday evening at the Ocasek Natatorium by a score of 183-113.
The Zips started strong right at the outset of the competition with a first place time in the 400 medley relay, with Ludwika Synzal, Hannah Raspopovich, Meghan Pearson and Kelsey Ferrante combining for a time of 3:56.97.
Following the 400 medley relay, Ashley Drazkowski and Kara Kaulius finished in first and second place, respectively, in the 1650 freestyle. Drazkowski touched the wall first at 17:52.49, while Kaulius ended the race at 17:56.20.
Juniors Kelsey Ferrante and Taylor Hart also finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 yard freestyle. Ferrante posted a time of 1:55.23, with Hart finishing a close second at 1:56.48.
In the 100 breaststroke, Akron earned a sweep of first, second and third place. Senior Kendra Colby (1:05.82) took first, junior Amanda Lawson (1:07.02) placed second, and sophomore Hannah Raspopovich (1:07.89) completed the sweep with third place.
After the 100 breaststroke, Erin Seiler earned first-place finish in the 200 butterfly at a time of 2:07.11, which was followed by Raspopovich with a first-place time of 24.57 in the 50 freestyle.
In the diving pool, freshman Paige Kelkenberg earned a top score of 272.02 in the 1-meter diving event. Fellow freshman Rachel Aepelbacher finished in third at 256.73. Kelkenberg also placed first for Akron in 3-meter diving with a score of 305.25.
After the 1-meter diving event, the Zips went on to have six individual first-place finishes and one team first-place time. UA earned first place in the 100 freestyle (Hart, 53.56), 200 breaststroke (Lawson, 2:26.15), 500 freestyle (Kaulius, 5:17.21), 100 butterfly (Erin Seiler, 57.38), 200 IM (Ashley Niznik, 2:12.56). The 200 freestyle relay team of Colby, Hart, Pearson and Raspopovich took first in the final event of the evening at a time of 1:38.41.
The Akron swimming and diving team honored six seniors on Friday – Kendra Colby, Amy Dorow, Danielle Dostall, Carla McNamara, Emma Pierson and Emily Reamer – for their dedication and hard work as both an athlete and a student.
UA will look ahead to a Mid-American Conference matchup against Ohio University of Jan. 25 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
