NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Akron men's golf team was honored for its academic success this week, as it was recognized as one of 79 Division I programs to earn All-Academic Team recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
This is the fifth-straight year that UA has earned All-Academic Team status from the GCAA, capturing the honors every year the award has been given.
GCAA All-Academic Teams carry a GPA of 3.0 or higher. To be eligible, a college or university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
Akron was joined on the All-Academic Team by fellow Mid-American Conference schools Ball State and Miami (Ohio).
Brown (Division I), Post (Division II), Greensboro College (Division III), Embry Riddle – AZ (NAIA), Scottsdale CC (NJCAA DI) and South Mountain CC (NJCAA DII) were named Academic National Champions for their respective divisions.
The GCAA was established in 1958 and is located in Norman, Okla. The GCAA is a non-profit organization and is the professional association of men's collegiate golf coaches. Through its established events and programs, the GCAA maintains a goal of increasing awareness and the status of men's golf. There are over 750 members in the GCAA representing all three NCAA divisions as well as NAIA and NJCAA.
The Zips are slated to kick off the 2013-14 campaign this fall when they travel to Pawleys Island, S.C. for the Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 8-10 at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.
