DETROIT – Troy Daniels had 23 points and Juvonte Reddic scored 21 as fifth-seeded VCU defeated 12th-seeded Akron 88-42 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night at the Palace at Auburn Hills.
VCU (27-8) used its trademarked full-court press to force Akron (26-7) into 10-second violations twice in less than a minute early in the game after it led 6-4, and the Rams scored 10-straight points to take control for good.
VCU closed the first half with a 16-3 run to lead 50-25 at intermission.
The Rams forced the Zips into 22 turnovers compared to seven on their side, and set a margin-of-defeat record by a team seeded third or lower. The previous mark was set by third-seeded Arizona in 1996, when it beat 14th-seeded Valparaiso by 39 points.
Akron got limited minutes from starting guard Brian Walsh and reserve center Pat Forsythe due to the flu, and guard Deji Ibitayo was out of the lineup because of back spasms.
Demetrius "Tree" Treadwell led the Zips with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Zeke Marshall posted 11 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots for UA.
