Swimming and Diving Finalizes MAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University of Akron swimming and diving team concluded the final day of the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday evening at the University at Buffalo with a total of 302 points.
Miami University came in first-place with 621 points in the eight-team field for the Championships. Ohio University followed in second with 505 points, and Bowling Green State University finished third with 467 points.
Junior diver Carla McNamara placed third in the three-meter diving event, the first event of the day. McNamara scored a 339.95, which sets a school record. Katie Carter set the previous record for Akron in one-meter diving in the 2008-09 season with a score of 339.68.
Catherine Carr continued her success in the final day of the MAC Championships. She earned third place in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:59.73, which sets a program record. Danielle Beland set the previous record in the 2003-04 season at a time of 2:00.42. The junior Carr had already placed second in the 400 IM and 200 IM in the days earlier in the MAC Championships. She also set the program record for the 200 IM on Thursday with a time of 2:01.56. Carr's accomplishments earned her All-MAC First Team honors, and was the only athlete from Akron swimming and diving to earn an honor.
Sophomore Amanda Lawson also broke a program record with a time of 2:17.24 in the 200 Breaststroke, good for sixth-place at the MAC Championships. Lawson eclipsed the previous record of 2:18.30 in the 200 Breastroke set by Rachel Szymkowiak last season. The native of Erie, Pa., had a previous personal best time in the 200 Breastroke of 2:20.76, which she set last season.
Kelsea Cross placed sixth in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:00.66. Her time in the 200 Backstroke at the MAC Championships breaks her season best time of 2:02.29.
Freshman Hannah Raspopovich had the fastest time for a freshman in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 51.23. Raspopovich notched a fourth-place time in the 100 Breaststroke and a tenth place finish in the 50 Freestyle in prior days in the the MAC Championships. Her fourth-place time of 1:02.33 in the 100 Breaststroke is now a program record.
