MAC Championship Central | Zips Athletics To Host NCAA Selection Watch Party Monday
AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron senior Aodhan Quinn has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year for 2013, the league office announced Friday in advance of this weekend's conference tournament.
Quinn, who was one of 10 Zips to earn all-league honors, becomes the ninth consecutive UA player to receive the league's top honor.
Joining Quinn on the 2013 All-MAC First Team from Akron were Reinaldo Brenes, Robbie Derschang, Bryan Gallego, Adam Najem, Fernando Pina, Andrew Souders, Victor Souto and Eric Stevenson. Saad Abdul-Salaam was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Quinn, who plays a key linking role in the Zips build up, has been one of the best attacking midfielders in the country during his final season in an Akron uniform. The native of San Diego, Calif., enters the postseason tied for second on the team with four goals and essentially willed UA to its two biggest wins of the season.
The first came on a penalty kick against then-ranked No. 15 Wake Forest in October in a 1-0 affair. The second was much more spectacular as his brace rallied the Zips to a 2-1 win over No. 11 Penn State last week.
With the Zips trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Quinn found the equalizer in the 83rd minute on a free kick goal that sailed into the upper right 90 from straight on. Then, with less than five minutes remaining in the second overtime period, he ended the match with a highlight-reel worthy strike off another restart.
His bending free kick from the right side sailed across the goal from 20 yards out and tucked just under the cross bar and inside the far post. Quinn also recorded the game-winning goal at the College of Charleston in the season opener in August.
Also announced by the league office Friday, Buffalo's Russell Cicerone was named MAC Newcomer of the Year and Hartwick's John Scott picked up MAC Coach of the Year honors.
All 24 members of the all-conference team, as well as specialty award winners, were voted on by MAC men's soccer head coaches.
As the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament, Akron will face fourth-seeded West Virginia in the second semifinal match today at 7 p.m., at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. Second-seeded Western Michigan will meet No. 3-seed Hartwick in the first contest starting at 4 p.m.
The winners will advance to the MAC Tournament championship game, which will be held Sunday at 1 p.m.
