AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2012 season Thursday with the 44th running of the Tommy Evans Invitational at Firestone Metro Park.
The women's 5K race begins at 5:30 p.m., and the men's 4-mile race will follow at 6:15 p.m. Competing with the Zips will be men's and women's teams from Kent State, Malone, Marshall and Youngstown State.
Akron will once again host a canned food drive to coincide with the Tommy Evans Invitational. Fans are being asked to bring two canned food items – preferably fruits and vegetables – to the meet.
All donations will directly benefit the Haven of Rest Ministries – a non-profit, faith-based rescue mission that serves the homeless community in and around the Akron area.
Behind second and third-place finishes from Maria Moore (18:52) and Morgan Willis (19:19), the Zips women swept the competition in dual-meet scoring at the Tommy Evans Invite a year ago. At the same time, Brad Hough (20:14) won the men's race to lead Akron to wins against three of the four competing teams but was edged out by Kent State in 2011.
Moore and Willis represent two of six returning letterwinners on the women's side while Hough, a First Team All-Mid-American Conference runner last fall, is one of seven returners on the men's team.
The Tommy Evans Invitational serves as the lone home meet for both the men's and women's cross country teams. The Zips' men were picked to finish fourth in the MAC's preseason coaches poll while the women were picked seventh.
