AKRON, Ohio – Scott Caldwell, a senior midfielder from The University of Akron men's soccer team, was identified as one of 30 candidates for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award Tuesday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. Media, coaches and fans will then select a winner, which will be announced during the NCAA College Cup in Hoover, Ala., from Dec. 7-9.
As a two-year team captain and standout on-and-off the field of play, Caldwell has been the epitome of a complete student-athlete during his four-year career with the Zips.
While Akron fans may best remember him most for hitting the game-winning shot in the NCAA Championship match against Louisville in 2010, Caldwell, who was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List in August, has been just as successful in the classroom and in the community during his time at UA.
The native of Braintree, Mass., was a First Team NSCAA Academic All-American last fall and is a two-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference honoree. Caldwell currently owns a near-perfect 3.937 cumulative GPA as an accounting major at UA. Moreover, he is an active contributor in to the community, having volunteered at a number of youth soccer clinics in both the Akron area and near his hometown in Massachusetts.
Caldwell currently leads the Zips (4-1-2) with four goals and one assist through the first seven matches of 2012. He was named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News Monday after earning Offensive MVP honors at The University of Akron Tournament last weekend.
He becomes the fourth Akron player to be named to the watch list in the last five seasons. Current professional players Ben Zemanski was a semifinalist in 2009 and Anthony Ampaipitakwong won the award in 2010. Ossie Michalsen was a preseason candidate in 2008.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
