AKRON, Ohio – Scott Caldwell, the Offensive MVP of The University of Akron Tournament, was named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News Monday.
Fueled by a pair of goals by Caldwell, the Zips (4-1-2) breezed by No. 11 South Florida in a 5-0 shutout victory Sunday in the final match of Akron's home tournament. The senior captain and Hermann Trophy candidate opened the flood gates in the 15th minute by finishing a volley in front of the net, then converted a penalty kick in the second half to lead the rout.
Caldwell, a native of Braintree, Mass., has been extremely efficient in the attack with a team-high four goals coming on just seven shots this fall and has started all seven contests at midfield.
With Sunday's win, the Zips, who played No. 10 St. John's to a 1-all draw Friday, were named winners of The University of Akron Tournament for the fifth time in the previous six seasons.
The win also finished off an extremely challenging stretch of games that saw the Zips face six straight opponents ranked in last week's NSCAA top 25.
Akron will next open up Mid-American Conference play next weekend at Bowling Green. The Zips and Falcons will kick off at 7 p.m., next Saturday.
