AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team takes on West Virginia in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Morgantown, W. Va. The first game will go a full nine innings while the nightcap will be a seven-inning contest.
The game serves as the final tune-up for the Zips before Mid-American Conference action begins this weekend with UA hosting Ball State for a three-game set at Canal Park.
UA (5-12) is coming off a nine-day, eight-game spring break trip to Florida. The Zips went 4-4 on the trip, winning games over Xavier, Pittsburgh, Fairfield, and Chicago State.
West Virginia (10-11) won the first three games of its series against Manhattan last weekend, but dropped the final game on Sunday.
Akron is expected to have a staff day in both games, while the Mountaineers will put Dan Dierdorff on the mound for game one.
The Zips won the only meeting last season, grabbing a 3-2 victory in 11 innings at Canal Park on May 11. Samuel Trecaso scored the winning run, coming home on a fielder's choice.
Sophomore Tyler Begun leads UA at the plate, batting .328 with nine RBIs and two home runs. Trecaso is also swinging it well; batting .314 with a team high 13 runs driven in. Redshirt freshman Devan Ahart is 8-for-8 on steal attempts this season while scoring 11 runs.
Freshman outfielder Bobby Boyd leads WVU, batting .321 with 11 runs, while stealing 9-of-11 bases. Junior shortstop John Polonius has been hot as of late, hitting .313 with nine runs, one double, one home run and seven RBIs.
Sophomore first baseman Ryan McBroom leads the team with 14 RBIs, a result of six doubles and one home run. Junior outfielder/second baseman Brady Wilson has also had a strong showing, driving in 10 runs on one double, one triple and two home runs.
This weekend's series against Ball State begins Friday with a 3 p.m. game at Canal Park.
