Swimming and Diving Maintains Fifth Place at Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team remained in fifth place out of 10 teams as the Zips competed on day two of the annual Zippy Invitational at Ocasek Natatorium Saturday.
Toledo leads the women's team standings with 1184 points, while Akron stands fifth with 733 points, just seven points behind fourth place Buffalo. UB (1551 points) is in first place on the men's side.
Highlighting Saturday night's action for Akron were junior Kendra Colby (1:04.62) and sophomore Amanda Lawson (1:04.90), who earned second and third place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Hannah Raspopovich added a 20th place finish (1:06.75).
In the 100-yard backstroke, the Zips took fourth and fifth behind senior Kelsea Cross (56.41) and sophomore Kelsey Ferrante (56.99). Also for UA, senior Molly Raspopovich was 13th (57.97) and freshman Ashley Niznik won her finals heat and was 17th overall (58.35)
Junior Catherine Carr placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley with a clocking of 4:29.95, while senior Jessica Breymier was 16th in 4:39.22
Freshman Erin Seiler took sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.01 and senior Rachel Szymkowiak earned a 10th place finish in 57.63.
Senior Becca Zimmer was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.08 and classmate Becca Emerich (1:54.64) was fourth in the consolation final and 12th overall.
Akron's 200-yard medley relay team of Cross, Colby, Seiler and Hannah Raspopovich were fourth in 1:45.70. The B squad added a sixth place finish in 1:47.37. That relay comprised of Ferrante, Lawson, Carr and Niznik.
Junior Amy Dorow was Akron's top finisher in the 3-meter springboard event with 230.50 points, good for 10th place.
In the morning's prelim session, Akron had the top two qualifiers in the 100 breaststroke. Colby was fastest qualifier with a time of 1:04.12 and Lawson was second in 1:04.61. In addition, Hannah Raspopovich tied for 17th (1:06.97).
Four Zips advanced in the 100 back as Cross led the way for UA with a time of 56.12. She was followed by Ferrante in fourth (57.19), Molly Raspopovich in 12th (58.31) and Niznik in 21st (59.36).
Carr qualified to the 'A' final with a sixth place swim in the 400-yard IM (4:31.51), while Breymier was 14th (4:38.91).
Zimmer placed eighth in 200 free (1:54.36) and Emerich touched the wall 15th overall (1:55.24). In the 100 fly, Seiler took fifth in 57.16 and Szymkowiak was 11th in 57.97.
On Saturday, three Zippy Invite meet records were broken.
The Zippy Invitational wraps up Sunday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m.
