AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron senior David Meves, the NCAA's all-time shutouts leader, was named National Player of the Week by College Soccer News Monday.
With the 51st shutout of his career in a 1-0 victory at Michigan State last Wednesday, Meves surpassed the previous record holder – Josh Ford, who notched 50 clean sheets for Wake Forest from 2007-10 – to claim the top spot in college soccer history.
Meves and the Zips (15-1-2, 7-0-0 Mid-American Conference) made it a clean sweep last week by defeating Western Michigan in similar style during the regular-season finale at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Meves, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill., has allowed just six goals in 1,660 minutes in 2012 for a goals-against-average (GAA) of 0.33 and has been a part of 14 shutouts, which is the program's third highest single-season total all-time. The Zips posted eight straight shutouts earlier this year and have allowed just one goal in their last 1,181:30 of play, dating back to Sept. 14.
For his career, Meves has started 90 matches and allowed 46 goals in 8,228 minutes (0.50 GAA) while making 206 saves. He is the school's all-time leader for wins (74), minutes played and shutouts.
Zips Ranked No. 1
Two of the five major polls are out this week and Akron is the No. 1 team in the country, according to Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. The Zips are unbeaten in their last 13 matches and winners of their last 12.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll will be released Tuesday afternoon.
