TOLEDO, Ohio – The Akron football team closed out its season with a 35-23 loss to Toledo in Mid-American Conference cross divisional play on Tuesday night at the Glass Bowl.
The Rockets (8-4, 6-2 MAC) were led by quarterback Austin Danton who completed 29-of-35 passes for 327 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Three of his TDs came in the second quarter – connecting with Alonzo Russell on 23- and 39-yard strikes and David Pasquale on a 55-yarder – to give the home team a 21-17 lead at the half.
In the fourth quarter, Dantin added a 2-yard scoring pass to Alex Zmolik and a 3-yarder to Justin Olack to make it 35-17. Kyle Pohl connected with Jerrod Dillard on a 3-yard TD pass for the Zips (1-11, 0-8 MAC) with 3:30 to play to account for the final margin as Akron's two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
After Toledo pulled ahead 14-10, Akron briefly regained the lead on Pohl's 30-yard TD pass to Keith Sconiers. The Zips opened the scoring on Robert Stein's 31-yard field goal and made it 10-0 late in the first quarter on Jawon Chisholm's 4-yard scoring run.
Pohl was 28-of-42 passing for 213 yards and one interception. L.T. Smith led the UA receivers with 79 yards off of four catches. Chisholm had six catches for 31 yards and 47 yards rushing on 17 tries.
Kurt Mangum paced the Akron defense with 10 tackles and had one interception. Justin March finished with nine stops for the Zips.
Zips Notebook: The game was televised nationally on ESPN2 ... QB Kyle Pohl served as the backup all season to Dalton Williams ... Williams was under center for UA's first two drives tonight (2-for-4 passing, 52 yards) and Pohl played for the duration after that ... Pohl had seen limited duty in five games prior to tonight, and entered the contest 10-for-16 passing with three touchdowns and one interception ... K Robert Stein converted his eighth-straight field goal ... LB Kurt Mangum posted his sixth double-digit tackle performance of the season ... WR Jerrod Dillard tallied his team-high ninth TD catch of the season ... Chisholm's TD was his fifth on the ground this season and he closed out the campaign with seven total.
