AKRON, Ohio – Senior Scott Caldwell, a midfielder from the No. 2 University of Akron men's soccer team, has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Caldwell, a candidate for the Hermann Trophy and finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, netted the game-winning goal in the Zips' 2-1 victory over West Virginia last Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. It was his team-leading eighth goal on the year and sixth career game-winner.
The decisive strike followed a Zips' shot that was cleared off the line. Dillon Serna gained possession on the left side of the field before crossing the ball to Caldwell, who buried it from straight on in the 50th minute against WVU in a key conference match-up.
With the victory, UA (11-1-2, 5-0-0 MAC) took control of its own postseason destiny and will have the chance to clinch the program's eighth MAC regular-season championship this Saturday with a win or tie at Hartwick.
Caldwell and the Zips will be in action at Ohio State tonight at 8 p.m. (ET) in a match that will broadcast locally on Fox Sports 1350 AM (WARF) and on-line via iHeartRadio.
The contest with also be televised nationally by the Big Ten Network. Check local listings for channel information.
