Swimming Competes at Tom Stubbs Relays

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Akron swimmers posted a pair of second place finishes Friday as the Zips competed at Bowling Green's Tom Stubbs Relays at Cooper Pool.
The meet featured a series of ten relays, including the 200 and 400 medley relay, 3x100 butterfly, 3x100 backstroke, 3x100 breaststroke, 3x500 freestyle, 4x100 individual medley and the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
There was no diving competition and schools had the opportunity to enter multiple teams for each race. Toledo and Youngstown State joined Akron and BGSU at the meet, which was not scored.
The Zips 'A' relay posted second place showings in the 3x100-yard breaststroke relay and the 4x100-yard IM relay. Akron's top relay also had five third place finishes and three fourths.
The 3x100-yard breaststroke relay team of freshman Hannah Raspopovich, sophomore Amanda Lawson and junior Kendra Colby finished second to Bowling Green in 3:22.73. In the 4x100-yard IM relay, senior Kelsea Cross, sophomore Kelsey Ferrante, freshman Erin Seiler and junior Catherine Carr were second behind Toledo in 4:07.75.
Cross, Colby and Carr combined with freshman Ashley Niznik for a third place finish in the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, in a time of 1:48.92. Cross, Seiler and Carr were third in the 3x100 butterfly relay (2:54.66) and Cross and Carr combined with Ferrante for a third place in the 3x100 backstroke relay (2:55.48).
In the 800 free relay, Carr, senior Becca Emerich, senior Becca Zimmer and freshman Ashley Drazkowski touched the wall third in 7:53.35. Carr, Zimmer and Drazkowski also swam third in the 3x500 freestyle relay (15:50.82).
Earning fourth place finishes for Akron were the 400 medley relay of Cross, Colby, Seiler and Niznik (4:02.22), the 400 free relay of Niznik, Drazkowski, sophomore Taylor Hart and Ferrante (3:42.89) and the 200 free relay of Hannah Raspopovich, Hart, senior Rachel Hunsinger and Niznik (1:41.04).
Akron will next compete in its first regular season dual meet of the 2012-13 season on Friday, Oct. 19 at Duquesne.
