AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimmers will travel to Bowling Green Friday to compete in the Tom Stubbs Relays. Events from BGSU's Cooper Pool are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
The meet features a series of ten relays, including the 200 and 400 medley relay, 3x100 butterfly, 3x100 backstroke, 3x100 breaststroke, 3x500 freestyle, 4x100 individual medley and the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays. There will not be a diving competition and schools will have the opportunity to enter multiple teams for each race. Toledo and Youngstown State will join Akron and BGSU at the meet.
Head Coach Nittaya Klim returns 21 letter winners from last year's team, including two current school record holders in junior Catherine Carr (400-yard IM) and senior Rachel Szymkowiak (200-yard breaststroke).
At last Saturday's Intrasquad Meet at Ocasek Natatorium, senior Kelsea Cross led the Gold team to a 94-54 win over the Blue team. Cross was a double event winner as she touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM.
Also winning events last weekend at the annual Intrasquad Meet were freshman Ashley Niznik (100-yard freestyle), freshman Erin Seiler (100-yard butterfly), junior Kendra Colby (100-yard breaststroke) and junior Carla McNamara in the diving competition.
Following the Tom Stubbs Relays, Akron will compete in its first regular season dual meet of the 2012-13 season on Friday, Oct. 19 at Duquesne.
