January 17 | Track & Field
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron's Willie Brown and Valerie Fraizer (formerly Wert) have each garnered Mid-American Conference track and field honors, the league office announced Tuesday. Both athletes turned in winning performances last weekend during the Akron Opener at the Stile Athletics Field House.
Brown, who won the 800-meter run and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay team, was named the conference's Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Fraizer claimed Female Field Athlete of the Week honors after winning the weight throw with a near record mark.
Brown, a first team All-American in 2011, picked up where he left off a year ago by winning the 800m with a time of 1:52.18, which stands as the 24th-fastest time in the country. The Cleveland native and school record-holder for both the indoor and outdoor 800m then ran anchor on the 4x400 relay team that clocked a time of 3:15.94.
Fraizer, who was an All-America Honorable Mention in the discus last summer, recorded the second-best toss in school history in the weight throw with a mark of 65-07.50. With the throw, the senior from Lexington, Ohio, topped her previous personal high by nearly eight inches and recorded the seventh-best mark in the country to date.
Both the Zips' men's and women's track and field teams will be in action once again Friday night at the Kent Duals.
