Spartan Invitational Day Two Results
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Ksenia Berestetska advanced herself to the championship round of flight C singles and joined forces with Natalia Kuvakina to win the flight B doubles consolation bracket to highlight the Akron tennis team's performance on Saturday in day two of the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State.
After a pair of singles victories on Friday, Berestetska was set to face off against Michigan State's Gruber today and advanced by default due to injury. Berestetska will go against UIC's Haley Craig tomorrow for the title. Kuvakina suffered a 6-0, ret. decision to Craig in the bracket's other semifinal contest.
Berestetska and Kuvakina defeated Frederique Sunstrum and Raquel Vescovi of IPFW 8-6 and then Marquette's Ana Pimienta and Kristina Radan by the same score to win the consolation bracket of flight B doubles.
In flight A singles, Zips Zara Harutyunyan and Angelika Jogasuria were each defeated in semifinal round action. Harutyunyan, listed No. 118 in the ITA's preseason rankings, lost 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Mimi Nuguyen of Michigan. Jogasuria fell 6-2, 7-5 to Rebecca Shine of Louisville.
In the flight A singles consolation, Olga Shkundina won 6-0, 6-3 over Brooke Dennis of IPFW.
Angelika Jogasuria and identical twin Angelina Jogasuria advanced to the flight A doubles semifinal, falling 9-7 to UIC's Mariya Kovaleva and Craig. Harutyunyan and Shkundina lost in the quarterfinal round to Purdue's Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder, 8-4.
In flight B singles consolation play, Angelina Jogasuria posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Louisville's Manuela Velasquez
The three-day event concludes tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. ET.
