Volleyball Adds Lawler to 2011 Class

AKRON, Ohio – Head coach Ron Arenz and The University of Akron volleyball program have completed the 2011 signing class with the addition of outside hitter Janine Lawler. A California native, Lawler will join the Zips as a junior after spending her first two seasons playing for Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif.
Last December, Arenz inked high school standouts Mary Delich and Kymberle Gordon, giving UA a trio of newcomers that will compete in the fall.
"Janine has a high volleyball IQ and is a hard worker," said Arenz. "She could fit in many different ways, as she can play on either side and can be a primary passer. I expect her to compete for a starting spot."
At Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., Lawler was named first-team All-Mohave River League in 2007 and 2008, as well as MVP in 2008. While playing at Palomar College, she earned second-team All-Pacific Coast Conference honors in both 2009 and 2010. She is the daughter of Mike and Jill Lawler, who were both collegiate athletes.
The Zips will kick off the 2011 season the weekend of Aug. 26 against Arkansas State at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Tournament.
