Track Lands Eight on All-MAC Academic Indoor Teams

Eight members of The University of Akron track and field team,
including three from the men's side and five from the women's, were
named to the All-Mid-American Conference Academic Indoor Teams, the
league office announced Friday.
Earning the distinction from the 2010 MAC Indoor Champion men's
team were Phil
Ferguson, Austin
Levering and Mike
McCall while Felicia
Close, Katherine
Lee, Kim
Lorentz, Cassie
Schenck and Valerie
Wert were recognized from the women's team. Levering and
Close were honorable mention honorees.
Two of the men's honorees were repeat winners at the MAC Indoor
Championships in Bowling Green last February as Ferguson won his
second consecutive crown in the 200m with a time of 21.54 while
also finishing second in the 400m with a time of 48.33. Meanwhile,
McCall won his third straight MAC Indoor Championship in the high
jump with a clearance of 6-08.75. Additionally, the senior won the
high jump at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships (6-08.75) and at the
Akron Opener (7-00.25).
Ferguson, a junior from Copley, Ohio, carries a 3.343 cumulative
grade-point-average as a mass media major at UA while McCall, a
senior from Richfield, Ohio, owns a 3.259 GPA as a sports
management major. Both were named to the All-MAC First Team for the
2010 indoor season.
Schenck, who won the MAC Individual Championship in the mile with a
PR time of 4:50.20, headlines the quartet of honorees on the
women's side. It was the third time Schenck, an All-MAC Indoor
First Team honoree, won the mile during the indoor season overall
following first-place finishes at the Akron Invitational (4:51.30)
and the Zips Invitational (4:52.33). Her winning time at the MAC
Indoor Championships represented the second-fastest mark in school
history.
Schenck, a senior from Mantua, Ohio, owns a 3.430 GPA as an
international business major at UA.
Lee finished the season ranked 25th in the nation in the pole vault
after clearing 13-07.00 at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet
following a fourth-place finish (12-11.50) at the MAC Indoor
Championships. Her 2010 indoor season highlights also include
clearing 13-05.25 at the National Pole Vault Summit in January.
Lee, a junior from Alexandria, Va., owns a 3.800 GPA as a dietetics
major at UA.
Wert also scored at the MAC Indoor Championships with a
fourth-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 59-05.00.
She finished the season ranked 26th in the country after a throw of
64-03.75 at the Penn State National and won the weight throw twice
at the Zips Invitational (63-02.25) and the Akron Opener
(59-10.50).
Wert, a senior from Lexington, Ohio, owns a 3.842 GPA as an art
education major at UA.
Lorentz won the mile in back-to-back meets at the Akron Opener
(5:01.85) and the Kent Dual (4:56.90) and posted UA's top time of
the season in the 3000m (9:43.68) at the Penn State national. She
also excelled in the 800m, placing third (2:17.09) at the Kent Dual
and fourth (2:19.1) at the Akron Opener.
Lorentz, a senior from Mayfield, Ohio, owns a 3.961 GPA as a
biology major at UA.
Levering, a sophomore from Caledonia, Ohio, competed in the weight
throw (54-08.75) and the shot put (51-08.25) at the MAC Indoors. He
owns a 3.812 GPA as a biology major. Close, a senior from
Gallipolis, Ohio, scored in the MAC Indoor Championships, placing
eighth with 3,450 points in the pentathlon. She owns a 3.350 GPA as
a childhood education major.
