Tennis Defeats Buffalo 4-0 in MAC Quarterfinals

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Angelika Jogasuria's straight-set win at No. 2 singles clinched a 4-0 win for the second-seeded University of Akron tennis team over seventh-seeded Buffalo on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Championship at Ypsilanti High School. The Zips (18-4) have positioned themselves in the event's semifinal round for the second-consecutive season and second time in program history.
UA, which has won 10 of its last 11 matches, will take on
third-seeded Western Michigan on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET in the
semifinal round. WMU defeated sixth-seeded Eastern Michigan 4-2
today.
Akron took the early advantage over Buffalo (6-13) by claiming the
doubles point, behind victories at the first and third positions,
and won at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles flights in straight sets to
earn the right to advance in the bracket.
MAC Player of the Year and All-MAC First-Team choice Zara Harutyunyan teamed with Angelina Jogasuria at No. 1 doubles and took an 8-5 decision over
Miranda Podlas and Diana Popescu, and Zips Anya Baronayte and Jeremie Benjamin claimed the doubles point thanks to an 8-4 win
over Shelby Bates and Marta Stoyanova at No. 3.
All-MAC Second-Team member Angelika Jogasuria clinched the deciding match point with a 6-2,
6-0 victory over Aleksandra Petrova at No. 2 singles, after Prang Pantusart, also an all-league second-team member, got
the best of Stoyanova 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 and Harutyunyan disposed of
Popescu 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1.
At the time the match was decided, UA's Angelina Jogasuria was up 6-3, 4-3 at No. 4 over Kira Golenko,
Baronayte led 6-2, 2-3 at No. 5 versus Tamara Markovic and Natalia Kuvakina held a 6-2, 3-3 advantage over Podlas at No. 6.
Additionally, the Zips pair of Angelika Jogasuria and Pantusart led 7-3 at No. 2 doubles over
Golenko and Petrova when the early point was secured.
The tournament winner will earn the conference's automatic bid
to the NCAA Championship.
