Men's Golf Grabs Day One Lead at Illini Spring Classic
April 16 | Men's Golf
URBANA, Ill. -
The University of Akron men's golf team grabbed the day one lead before weather put a halt to play on Saturday at the Illini Spring Classic at the par-72, 7,018-yard Stone Creek Golf Club.
Facing nine of the 11 programs from the Big Ten and seven teams in the latest Golfstat Top-100, the Zips fired a round of 6-over 294 to pace the field. Akron holds a one-shot lead over tournament-host Illinois (295) and an e0ght-shot lead over third-place Indiana.
The Zips opened the second round with a score of 1-under before near freezing temperatures, rain and wind stopped play. Akron players were on holes two through five. The 1-under start gave UA a four-shot lead going into tomorrow, as the tournament will end after 36 holes instead of the original 54 holes.
Three Zips finished the day in the top-five, with freshman Charlie Bull, redshirt sophomore Tim Lew and junior Scott Landreth were in a four-way tie for fourth place with a score of 1-over 73.
Sophomore Cameron Simmons finished two strokes behind the Akron trio, posting a round of 3-over 75. Senior Lucas Murray rounded out the squad in a tie for 28th place after his round of 77 (+5).
The Zips, looking for their first win since the Xavier Invitational on October 6, 2009, will conclude the event tomorrow morning beginning at 10 a.m. ET. Golfstat live scoring will be available at GoZips.com.
