Final Game of Forest City Tournament Cancelled

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Steady rain has forced the cancellation of The University of Akron's final contest of the Forest City Tournament. The Zips had been scheduled to battle in-state rival Ohio State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Akron will now prepare to travel to central Florida for their spring break trip.
The Zips split a doubleheader in Forest City on Friday before rain washed out the rest of the weekend at McNair Field. Akron was dropped by Western Carolina 9-8 before bouncing back to take out Army 4-1 Friday night. Junior Sam Watkins homered twice and totaled five RBIs in the two contests. Alex Loftin picked up the win - his first of the season - in the victory over Army. Loftin pitched 7.0 innings allowing just one run and four hits, while striking out seven.
Akron will participate in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational next week, beginning Friday with a game against Xavier in Winter Haven, Fla. The Zips will play eight games in nine days in and around Winter Haven, before beginning Mid-American Conference play at Canal Park in downtown Akron against Western Michigan March 25 - 27.
