Akron Improves to Fifth After Day Two of the Zippy Invite

AKRON, Ohio – Action continued at the Zippy Invitational Saturday evening with day two of finals at Ocasek Natatorium.
Akron improved to fifth in the team standings after Saturday's events with 517 points. Ohio continues to lead the meet with 1053 points. Army leads the men's meet with 1222 points, with Buffalo second and Xavier third.
Sophomore Carla McNamara grabbed her second runner-up finish in as many nights, finishing .5 points behind champion Morgan Srail in the 3-meter springboard. McNamara compiled a 6-dive score of 272.40. Leeanna Hoover finished eighth in the event with a score of 234.00.
The Zips claimed a pair of top ten finishes in the 200-yard freestyle with Becca Zimmer and Meg Finnerty taking fifth and seventh, respectively. Both Zips topped their morning swims. Zimmer swam a 1:53.61, which was also her season best. Finnerty finished in 1:54.83. Becca Emerich also scored in the event for Akron, taking 23rd in 1:56.88.
Sophomore Kendra Colby led a trio of Akron scorers in the 100-yard breaststroke with an eighth place finish. Colby touched home in 1:07.59. Freshman Amanda Lawson was 13th in 1:06.79 and junior Rachel Szymkowiak was 24th with her finish of 1:09.58.
The Akron 800-yard freestyle relay of Catherine Carr, Finnerty, Emerich, and Zimmer placed eighth with a time of 7:44.53.
Junior Kelsea Cross was 13th in the 100-yard back bettering her morning time with a swim of 58.15. Carr finished 15th in the 400-yard individual medley, completing her finals' heat in 4:38.42. Senior Jessica Ickes finished 21st in the 100-yard butterfly and lowered her season best in the process (58.46).
The final day of the 2011 Zippy Invitational begins with prelims tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at Ocasek Natatorium. The finals of tomorrow's events will begin at 4:00 p.m. and heats of the 1650-yard freestyle will be contested in between the morning and afternoon session.
