Men's Golf to Play Host to 17-Team Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team returns to action on Monday when it plays host to The Firestone Invitational at the world famous Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
This year's event will begin Monday morning with a shotgun start to the first round at 8:30 a.m. on the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course. The second round will immediately follow the conclusion of the first round. Teams will wrap up the event with tee times at the No. 1 and No. 10 tees on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The Zips will welcome 16 teams to this year's event, including squads from the Mid-American Conference, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12, among others. The 2011 field includes seven Golfstat Top-100 teams, the No. 4 Division II team in the country and the No. 82 Zips. Other teams in the tournament include No. 58 Ball State, No. 93 Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, No. 34 Indiana, Kansas State, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, No. 36 SMU, No. 56 St. Mary's (Calif.), No. 72 South Alabama, Toledo, No. 4 USC-Aiken (Division II) and Wisconsin.
Indiana returns as the defending team champion from the 2010 edition of The Firestone Invitational, winning the event with a three-round score of 849 (-15). The Zips finished in eighth place with a tally of 15-over 879.
Akron is coming off a second-place finish at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Oct. 2. The Zips posted a three-round score of 23-over 875 to defeat third-place Southern Illinois by 10 strokes (885). Sophomore Charlie Bull continued his hot streak to open the season, posting a two-day tally of 213 (E) to finish tied for third place. His effort over the weekend earned him his first MAC Golfer of the Week honor.
