Track and Field Set to Compete at All-Ohio Championships

The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams
will be in action this weekend at the All-Ohio Indoor Track and
Field Championships at Kent State. The two-day, 22-team event
begins Friday at 2 p.m. at the Kent State Field House.

Competing with the Zips this weekend will be five Mid-American
Conference foes in Bowling Green, the host Golden Flashes, Miami
(Ohio), Ohio University and Toledo. Also making the trip will be
Ashland, Central State, Cincinnati, Dayton, Findlay, Lake Erie,
Malone, Notre Dame (Ohio), Ohio State, Tiffin, Ursuline (Ohio),
Wright State, Xavier and Youngstown State.
The UA men's team enters the week having won each of its first two
meets of the season, defeating Temple in its season opener and then
beating visiting Kent State at Stile Athletics Field House last
Friday. In all, the Zips own eight of the top marks reported in the
Mid-American Conference thus far, led by senior Collister
Fahie, who leads the league in both the long jump (24-08.25)
and triple jump (50-02.50). Fahie is ranked 13th nationally in the
long jump and 15th among all Division I athletes in the triple
jump.
Sophomore Willie
Brown was named MAC Track Athlete of the Week Tuesday after
breaking the school record in the 800 against the Golden Flashes
with a winning time of 1:51.37. It stands as the top mark in the
conference, followed by teammate Max
Hiltner, who clocked a 1:53.07 at the same meet, and is the
12th-fastest time in the country. Junior Phil
Ferguson owns the league's top times in both the 200 (21.51)
and the 400 (48.08), which ranks him 19th and 23rd nationally,
respectively.
Seniors Mike
McCall and Mike
Uhle are also off to a fast start in the their respective
events. McCall, the reigning MAC Indoor Champion, cleared 7-00.25
in the high jump to lead the league and is ranked 13th nationally
while All-American Uhle is the MAC's top pole vaulter after having
cleared 17-04.50, which ranks him third nationally.
The women's team picked up their first win of the season last week
against the Golden Flashes after finishing second to Cincinnati in
a tri-meet in the season opener at Stile Athletics Field House.
Senior Kim Lorentz was named MAC Track Athlete of the
Week Tuesday after recording a PR with a winning time of 4:56.90 in
the mile, which stands as the second-best reported time in the
league (46th nationally) entering the week. Outdoor All-American Valerie
Wert is the MAC's leader in the weight throw with a toss of
59-10.50, which ranks 36th nationally.
