With a brand of play that is attractive and attack-oriented, yet effective on both sides of the ball, The University of Akron men's soccer team blitzed the college world for the second straight season and captured the school's first team national championship in any sport with a 1-0 victory over Louisville in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Dec. 12.
Along the way, the Zips matched a pair of impressive NCAA milestones by posting their 11th consecutive shutout and extending their home unbeaten streak to 39 games with a perfect 13-0 record at Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field. With a 22-1-2 record during its historic run, Akron pushed its overall mark to 45-2-3 over the course of the past two seasons and has lost just once during the regular run of play in its last 50 matches.
Individually speaking, UA was just as impressive in 2010 with a host of national postseason award winners including Hermann Trophy recipient Darlington Nagbe, Academic All-America of the Year and Soccer America Player of the Year Kofi Sarkodie, and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honoree Anthony Ampaipitakwong. In all, Sarkodie was one of four Zips named to the Academic All-America Team - another UA standard - as the team posted the eighth-highest cumulative team GPA in the nation (3.33).
