Swimming and Diving Set to Host Marshall Friday
January 13 | Women's Swimming & Diving
After having taking nearly a month and a half break from competition, The University of Akron swimming and diving team will be back in action with a pair of meets this weekend, starting with a home match-up against Marshall Friday evening at Ocasek Natatorium.
Swimmers Step Up: Friday's swimming action pits the Zips against the Thundering Herd of Marshall. The meet is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. in Ocasek Natatorium. UA will then make the short trip east to Youngstown State on Saturday for a tri-meet with the host Penguins and St. Francis (Pa.). That meet begins at 1:00 p.m. This weekend's competitions mark the first of five meets leading up to the Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be held Feb. 23-26 at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
Meet Coverage: Live video streaming of Saturday's meet at Youngstown State will be available via the Horizon League Website.

Last Time Out: The Zips have not competed since hosting the annual Zippy Invitational on December 3-5. The Zips finished fourth in the meet and were led by strong showings in both of the diving events as well as by strong performances in the pool from Rebecca Zimmer and Katie Miles. Akron placed four divers (Amanda Angeloff, Carla McNamara, Jayne Malloy, and Leeanna Hoover) in the top eight in the one-meter springboard and took three (Angeloff, Hoover, and McNamara) of the top five spots in the three-meter. Zimmer finished third in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle while Miles turned in a third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
Zone Qualifiers: A pair of Akron divers have turned in performances that have qualified them for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Amanda Angeloff's second place score in the three-meter springboard at the Zippy Invitational of 282.75 and Leeanna Hoover's one-meter score of 267.00 - turned in against Pittsburgh on Oct. 22 - are both Zone qualifiers.
At Look at the MAC Rankings: A pair of UA swimmers and several UA divers are in the top ten of the Mid-American Conferences rankings. Rebecca Zimmer has the seventh fastest 1000-yard freestyle this season (10:22.51), while Kelsea Cross's 100-yard backstroke time of 57.41 ranks as the tenth fastest time in the event this season. Divers Amanda Angeloff, Leeanna Hoover, and Carla McNamara are ranked eighth, ninth, and tenth in the three-meter springboard. Hoover is ranked seventh and McNamara ninth in the one-meter springboard.
A Look Ahead: After this weekend's pair of meets, the UA swimming and diving team will face-off against the Ohio Bobcats on Oct. 22 in Athens.
