September 04 | Women's Volleyball
Lawrence, Kansas - After falling to tournament host Kansas to start the day, The University of Akron volleyball team rebounded with a dominant 3-0 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga Friday evening at the Jayhawk Classic.
In the sweep, sophomore Morgan Kuhn tied the school record posting eight service aces against the Mocs to join former Zips Patti Godzinski (WMU, 10/7/94) and Claudia Orban (NE Illinois, 10/19/90) atop the record books.
Akron opened the first set with 7-0 start taking its biggest lead at the 21-9 point. UTC would go on a 4-0 run (21-13) but it would be the Mocs final point of the set as three Chattanooga errors and a kill from redshirt freshman Alex Wiederholt provided the 25-13 win.
The second set started out much tighter as the two squads went point for point. Tied 7-7, Akron would pull away for a 12-7 lead thanks to a Kuhn ace and four UTC errors. The Mocs never came with more than three to provide UA the 23-20 win.
After going up dominantly through the first two sets, Akron fell behind in the third set with the Mocs taking a 5-1 lead. Down 20-17, three service aces from Kuhn and forced Moc errors gave UA the victory.
Junior Courtney Jarvis would start the rebound posting a kill (18-20) followed by a ace from Kuhn which prompted a timeout. To no avail, Kuhn would post a consecutive ace to tie the contest for the first time. Jarvis gave UA its first lead with her tenth kill and another Kuhn ace put UA up 22-20. Two attacks would keep UTC in it (23-22) but two follow-up errors gave UA the 25-22 win.
"Our team took a great step in the right direction my maintaining our level throughout the Chattanooga match," said head coach Ron Arenz. "The win should give us the confidence we need going into tomorrow's match against a very talented Arkansas team."
In the victory, Wiederholt and sophomore Paiton Twitty led UA at the net combing for two solo blocks and nine block assists.
Akron opened the day against Kansas falling in three (15-25, 16-25, 13-25). The Zips took a 6-2 lead to start the game but a strong attacking Jayhawk squad would hold UA to a .075 hitting mark posting a .359 on their side of the ball.
Redshirt freshman Ari Mewhorter led UA offensively in the loss posting a season-high 11 kills.
