Volleyball Preps For Jayhawk Classic

AKRON, Ohio - After a successful opening stint, The University of Akron volleyball team will return to the road this weekend for the Jayhawk Classic taking on tournament host Kansas, Arkansas and Tennessee-Chattanooga.

A HOMECOMING
• The Classic will be a homecoming for lone senior Jackie
Goleman who is from nearby De Soto, Kansas. Goleman had a solid
first weekend of play posting 19 kills, four digs, two assists and
one block assist.
TEAM NOTES
• The Zips grabbed two wins at the West Virginia Classic
claiming victories over Youngstown State and Howard in three sets.
Despite a loss to tournament host WVU, Akron still bested its
opponents in every category except blocks.
• Serving became a pivotal point for UA with Akron out serving their opponents 1.78-.33 SA/S. Sophomore Morgan Kuhn led the way for the Zips with seven service aces.
• Akron leads the Mid-American Conference defensively posting a league high 19.11 D/S.
PLAYER NOTES
• Sophomore libero Chelsea
Harvey was named MAC East Division Defensive Player of the Week
after her season opening performance. Wrapping up her inaugural
season in 2009 as the team leader in digs, Harvey continued that
pace to start 2010 nabbing 56 digs with only one reception error
while posting a .985 receiving percentage.
• Harvey's 6.22 D/S leads the league through the first week of play.
• Junior Courtney Jarvis proved to be the leader on both sides of the ball posting a team-high 38 kills and 37 digs through the first three games. Jarvis' 4.22 K/S is second among the league.
• Also seeing solid action to open the season were UA's newcomers with five seeing their first floor action. True freshman Alex Cocklin shined in her first collegiate game posting a team-leading 13 kills against YSU.
