Freshman forward Kelly DeNiro recorded her first career goal, but it was not enough as The University of Akron women's soccer team was dropped 4-1 by Long Beach State Sunday morning at the UNLV Rebel Classic.
"I was very proud of the team today," said coach Chris Pfau. "We were able to do some nice things despite battling 100 plus degree temperatures over the last 3 days and playing a very talented Long Beach State team."
The 49ers used a pair of goals in each half to build a 4-0 lead before DeNiro's strike to the back post pulled a goal back for the Zips in the 86th minute. Katie Wise collected an assist on tbe UA score.
Seven different Zips registered shots in the match, while junior goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert made seven saves.
UA concludes their six-game road swing next weekend when they open Mid-American Conference play at Central Michigan on Friday and at Eastern Michigan on Sunday.
"These last 3 weeks have been very tough," added Pfau. "Not only were we facing strong teams, but playing them on the road was going to challenge us like never before. It exposed us, made us play tougher and quicker, and will help us heading into conference play next weekend."
